You could read some of their papers, but you would want to focus more on a general comment about why you want to work with them. If they study something in particular, you could mention that you are interested in the professors work on that particular subject.

I think work experience is helpful and you should explain that in your personal statement. You can absolutely still contact professors and explain that you did not have guidance or the opportunity at your university to do research. If you are thinking of programs close to where you live, you could see if you could work with some graduate level professors on their research. Either way, don’t be afraid to contact people at the schools you want to attend! They will understand if you have no research experience. Let me know if you have any other questions!
